If you are unsure as to what “scatter” implies, well in some countries they are more commonly termed as “throw” types. They are mostly decorative but can also be used for comfort, as any pillows and cushions can! Due to their decorative nature, they are found in a wide range of colours and designs. It is very common for somebody to buy several different designs, all of which complement each other in some way.
Often complete room renovations are neither practical nor necessary, particularly if you are simply looking to update what is already a nice assortment of room furnishings. Your good couch and comfortable chairs may not need to be replaced just because you are tired of looking at their hues, but rather enhanced with a new texture or colour. Accordingly, adding large scatter cushions may be the ideal way to add interest, functionality, and infuse some of your personal style into the living spaces that you love the most. Although seemingly small, such touches can have a big impact in how you view and even use your room furnishings.
Cheap scatter cushions are perhaps the most versatile room elements, as you can select small bolsters to dress up a window seat, or ones that are large enough create interest on a relatively large sofa. Small delicate pillows may add warmth to delicately outfitted spaces, and whimsical styles may add a fun element to recreational areas of your home. If your sofas and chairs are rather monochromatic or traditional, you can experiment with prints, colours, and textures in a quick and easy way. You may even enjoy changing your scatter cushions with each season, or adding velvet or sequined pillows to create an especially formal or dramatic effect.
Dressing up a sparse headboard or a relatively nondescript sofa or chair can be virtually effortless by adding cushions of various sizes, and you may select pastels, animal prints, crochet textures, or even cushions covered in blanket fabrics to make your rooms as inviting as you desire. Large cushions may even double as extra seating when needed, and then conveniently stored when not in use. Cushions with removable and washable covers are often ideal for common areas or for children to recline on as well. With the range of options available, your choice of pillows is likely only limited by your imagination.
These cushions are particularly useful for giving life to otherwise more mundane or neutral pieces of furniture. For example a brown sofa can be enlivened with pastel coloured cushions, a cream one with a striped or patterned cushion. Sometimes I’ve even positioned them on top of a dull set of drawers or a sound system’s speakers, just to bring something different to the room.
They tend to come at a pretty standard size; a square shape of approximately 16″-18″. Often they are fade-resistant and splashproof and sometimes waterproof – particularly useful if you want to use them outdoors! Materially they range from more luxurious leather to more synthetic designs in PVC. There are also spun polyester versions.
Prices are usually from £5-£20 for individual cushions, but for the better quality leather ones you can find yourself paying anything from £30- £100. Keep in mind that the prices you see may sometimes be for a pair of cushions, so be sure to check!
As well as for interior design, garden or outdoor scatter cushions are also very popular these days. However, you can always use your indoor ones outside so long as the weather is favourable!
